Could there really have been a way to save Elvis before it was too late?
It’s been decades since we lost the King of Pop, but his music was so iconic that his legacy is still fresh in our minds. A new documentary that takes a deeper look into the life of Elvis Presley has been released, and in that documentary, Priscilla Presley spoke openly about the final chapter of her ex-husband’s life. Much of the world saw the downward trajectory that Elvis Presley’s life was on, but many of those who were close to him were powerless to “save” him. “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” premiered last March in Austin, Texas, and at the film’s debut, Priscilla Presley, who produced the documentary, spoke at length about the late King of Rock & Roll.
“If you just viewed him as a Rock and Roll icon you will walk away knowing a much more personal side of what he had to cope with,” Priscilla Presley later wrote on social media. “You will have a greater understanding of the man we all fell in love with and embrace him even more.” Priscilla Presley also explained how Elvis’ death came as a shock to those closest to him. She said that even though his inner circle was aware of the singer’s day-to-day struggles, they never expected his untimely death.
Priscilla Presley also opened up about Elvis’ prescription drug abuse, saying that his addiction started while he was serving in the U.S. Army. While he was stationed in Germany, soldiers were handed sleeping pills to help them get through their shifts, and this started the very vicious cycle of prescription drug abuse in Elvis’ life.
And even though his loved ones saw this struggle, they couldn’t do much about it. Priscilla Presley said that she did try to help him, but nothing she did ever work. “People there in the inner group did, but you did not tell Elvis Presley what to do,” Priscilla Presley said. “You did not.” She later continued: “I mean, you’d be out of there faster than a scratched cat. They would try and no way. He knew what he was doing.”
And, despite his drug abuse, Elvis’ musical career soared. Audiences were able to connect to his passion and he had the ability to communicate life’s deepest longings through his music. Watch the trailer for ‘The Searcher” documentary in the video below:
